Chapter Eight

The next day at work, Malik’s mother dressed in a tight black skirt that stopped at the knees, and a dressy purple top. Malik’s mother entered the big open office smiling while humming a tune. Everyone in the office looked at Malik’s mother. It was so silent, a cotton ball could hit the floor and it would make a noise. Some receptionists were sitting, while others were getting a cup of coffee.

“Well, don’t just sit there like bumps on a log! Let’s put some smiles on our faces! The sun is out, my son is about to leave for college, and I’m one proud momma!” Malik’s mother shouted as she did a little dance. “It’s a new day. Let’s be glad and rejoice in it!”

No one smiled or said a word.

“What’s wrong with y’all? Y’all look like somebody just died.”

No one said a word and some lowered their heads.

“Oh, Hell with you people!” Sandra said as she headed over to her work booth.

“What is this?” Sandra said. “Who did this?”

Sandra started pulling down papers that were taped all over her booth. Everyone watched Malik’s mother in silence.

“Oh God, this can’t be true!” Malik’s mother cried out loud.

Aniya was sitting at Nancy’s house on the couch eating chocolate cake when Nancy entered the living room.

“Enjoying it?” asked Nancy, she smiled and rocked back and forth in excitement, holding her hands behind her back.

“Oh, thank you so much, Mrs. Nancy. This was exactly what I needed!” Aniya said.

“Look what I bought the other day!” Nancy said as she removed her hands from her back, holding a pink and brown baby outfit.

“Wow, it’s adorable! I love it. Who’s it for?” asked Aniya.

“Zhori of course, who else?” Nancy said matter-of-factly. She smiled and admired the outfit in her hands.

“You mean your daughter that died?” Aniya asked as she stared at Nancy.

Nancy stared back at Aniya as the happiness left her face. It turned into anger.

“Nancy, are you okay? Did I say something wrong?” Aniya asked as she rose off of the sofa.

“Don’t you ever speak that way in my home!” Nancy yelled.

“I’m sorry, Nancy! What did I say to offend you?”

“My daughter is alive!”

“No, she’s not. You said she died.”

Nancy began to get red in the face as she stared at Aniya.

“Look Nancy, you’re really starting to freak me out,” Aniya said as she started to back away slowly.

A loud knock came from the front door. Nancy and Aniya continued to stare at one another. Another loud knock sounded and someone shouted Aniya’s name.

“I think that’s my mom calling. I have to go. I hope you can get through these hard times, Nancy,” Aniya said. She passed in front Nancy and headed toward the door.

Nancy just stared without saying a word as Aniya opened her front door.

“Baby, come here. We have to go!” Anita said urgently. She grabbed Aniya by the hand and pulled her out of Nancy’s house.

“What do you mean, momma?” Aniya asked nervously.

Anita continued to walk while she pulled on Aniya’s hand.
