Chapter Eight
The next day at work, Malikâs mother dressed in a tight black skirt that stopped at the knees, and a dressy purple top. Malikâs mother entered the big open office smiling while humming a tune. Everyone in the office looked at Malikâs mother. It was so silent, a cotton ball could hit the floor and it would make a noise. Some receptionists were sitting, while others were getting a cup of coffee.
âWell, donât just sit there like bumps on a log! Letâs put some smiles on our faces! The sun is out, my son is about to leave for college, and Iâm one proud momma!â Malikâs mother shouted as she did a little dance. âItâs a new day. Letâs be glad and rejoice in it!â
No one smiled or said a word.
âWhatâs wrong with yâall? Yâall look like somebody just died.â
No one said a word and some lowered their heads.
âOh, Hell with you people!â Sandra said as she headed over to her work booth.
âWhat is this?â Sandra said. âWho did this?â
Sandra started pulling down papers that were taped all over her booth. Everyone watched Malikâs mother in silence.
âOh God, this canât be true!â Malikâs mother cried out loud.

Aniya was sitting at Nancyâs house on the couch eating chocolate cake when Nancy entered the living room.
âEnjoying it?â asked Nancy, she smiled and rocked back and forth in excitement, holding her hands behind her back.
âOh, thank you so much, Mrs. Nancy. This was exactly what I needed!â Aniya said.
âLook what I bought the other day!â Nancy said as she removed her hands from her back, holding a pink and brown baby outfit.
âWow, itâs adorable! I love it. Whoâs it for?â asked Aniya.
âZhori of course, who else?â Nancy said matter-of-factly. She smiled and admired the outfit in her hands.
âYou mean your daughter that died?â Aniya asked as she stared at Nancy.
Nancy stared back at Aniya as the happiness left her face. It turned into anger.
âNancy, are you okay? Did I say something wrong?â Aniya asked as she rose off of the sofa.
âDonât you ever speak that way in my home!â Nancy yelled.
âIâm sorry, Nancy! What did I say to offend you?â
âMy daughter is alive!â
âNo, sheâs not. You said she died.â
Nancy began to get red in the face as she stared at Aniya.
âLook Nancy, youâre really starting to freak me out,â Aniya said as she started to back away slowly.
A loud knock came from the front door. Nancy and Aniya continued to stare at one another. Another loud knock sounded and someone shouted Aniyaâs name.
âI think thatâs my mom calling. I have to go. I hope you can get through these hard times, Nancy,â Aniya said. She passed in front Nancy and headed toward the door.
Nancy just stared without saying a word as Aniya opened her front door.
âBaby, come here. We have to go!â Anita said urgently. She grabbed Aniya by the hand and pulled her out of Nancyâs house.
âWhat do you mean, momma?â Aniya asked nervously.
Anita continued to walk while she pulled on Aniyaâs hand.
